Gold maintained its recent gains in global markets, bolstered by dip-buying, despite the resurgence of oil prices that reignited worries regarding inflation and the trajectory of US interest rates. Bullion was trading at approximately $4,130 an ounce, reflecting a 3% increase over the preceding two days. Buyers re-entered the market after a previous downturn, as ongoing conflicts in the Middle East sustained demand for the metal. Oil prices have surged to multiweek highs, prompting worries that elevated energy costs may exacerbate inflationary pressures in the US and impact the Federal Reserve’s decisions regarding interest rates. The US and Iran have signalled their unwillingness to reinitiate negotiations in light of a recent uptick in hostilities. Strikes were also reported against tankers traversing the Red Sea, representing the inaugural incidents of this nature since the onset of the conflict in late February.

Traders are evaluating the implications of increasing energy prices in conjunction with deteriorating US economic indicators ahead of the Federal Reserve’s upcoming meeting next week. Elevated borrowing costs typically exert downward pressure on gold, as the metal yields no interest income. Market participants are split regarding the likelihood of a rate increase by the US central bank, with the limited forward guidance provided under Fed Chair Kevin Warsh contributing to the prevailing uncertainty. Gold predominantly exhibited an inverse relationship with US Treasury yields throughout the conflict, subsequently maintaining its position above $4,000 this week, a threshold regarded by certain traders as a significant support level. The metal continues to trade approximately 20% lower than the levels observed prior to the military actions taken by the US and Israel against Iran in late February. Gold attained a historic peak of almost $5,600 per ounce in the preceding month, following a prolonged period of upward momentum.
