Gold prices in Dubai experienced a decline on Thursday morning, providing jewellery buyers with more favourable rates following an increase in prices during the prior session. The 24-karat variety was priced at Dh487.50 per gram at 9.54 am, reflecting a decrease of Dh4 from the previous rate of Dh491.50. The 22-karat rate experienced a decrease of Dh3.50, settling at Dh451.50, down from Dh455. Thursday’s decline came after a month of volatility for Dubai gold prices, with the 24-karat rate fluctuating between Dh481.50 and Dh503 per gram.
The metal peaked at Dh503 on July 5, subsequently declining to Dh481.50 by July 17. Prices subsequently increased to Dh500.75 on July 22, before declining to Dh485 on July 28 and then rebounding to Dh491.50 on Wednesday. Thursday’s rate positions 24-karat gold at Dh15.50 beneath its peak observed in July, while still standing Dh6 above the low recorded for the month. The 22-karat variety exhibited a comparable trend, increasing to Dh466 at the beginning of the month before experiencing a decline to Dh446 by mid-July. It experienced a brief recovery to Dh463.75 on July 22 before declining to Dh451.50 on Thursday.
International gold maintained a slight increase, hovering around $4,060 an ounce following a nearly 1% rise on Wednesday. The US Federal Reserve maintained interest rates at their current level following a 9-3 vote. This division among policymakers suggests that a faction remains convinced that elevated borrowing costs might still be necessary to manage inflation effectively. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh said, “If inflation continues to be elevated through the forecast period, interest rates could well be part of that solution, but I wouldn’t say it’s in isolation.”
Traders have adjusted their expectations regarding an imminent rate increase, postponing forecasts for the next move to later in the year. This shift has resulted in a decline in short-term US Treasury yields, consequently reducing the opportunity cost associated with holding gold. Bullion has declined by nearly a quarter since the onset of the US-Iran conflict over five months ago, with heightened energy prices exacerbating inflation worries and raising the likelihood of sustained higher interest rates. Recent buying interest at approximately $4,000 per ounce has bolstered prices, positioning gold for its inaugural monthly increase since February.
