Dubai gold prices declined on Wednesday morning, continuing their downward trend from the beginning of the week and reducing local rates from some of the peak levels observed thus far this month. The 24-karat variety was priced at Dh522.50 per gram, reflecting a decrease of Dh3.50 from the previous price of Dh526 on Tuesday. The 22-karat rate decreased to Dh483.75 from Dh487, reflecting a reduction of Dh3.25 per gram. The latest move positions 24K gold at Dh8.25 below Monday’s Dh530.75 level, while 22K has decreased by Dh7.75 from Dh491.50 during the same timeframe. Gold prices in Dubai exhibited significant fluctuations throughout August.
The 24K rate commenced the month at Dh487.25, subsequently ascending past Dh500 to attain Dh533.25 on August 12, marking the peak among the rates reported for the month. Wednesday’s rate of Dh522.50 is Dh10.75 lower than the level observed on August 12, yet it is still Dh35.25 higher than the price noted on August 1. The 22K variety exhibited a comparable trajectory, increasing from Dh451.25 at the beginning of August to Dh494 on August 12, before retreating to Dh483.75 on Wednesday. Global bullion prices experienced an uptick on Wednesday following a retreat in US bond yields, which alleviated some of the downward pressure that had caused gold to decline by nearly 2% in the prior session.
Gold increased by as much as 0.6%, trading above $4,360 an ounce, following its largest decline in nearly a month on Tuesday. US Treasuries stabilised following a sell-off that had driven yields on 30-year notes to their peak in nearly twenty years. Increased bond yields and elevated borrowing costs can exert downward pressure on gold, as the metal does not generate interest income. Gold has seen a recovery in recent weeks, trading at approximately $4,400 per ounce. This resurgence is bolstered by a revival in investor demand and increased purchases from central banks, notably from China. A Bank of America fund manager survey released on Tuesday indicated that the proportion of respondents perceiving gold as undervalued had attained its peak since March 2023.
Uncertainty surrounding US-Iran relations continues to be a significant factor influencing the market. US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that discussions with Tehran are not occurring, while the memorandum of understanding signed by both nations in June has lapsed without an extension. Oil prices have increased due to the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Increased inflation driven by energy costs may intensify the pressure on the US Federal Reserve to elevate interest rates, potentially exerting downward pressure on gold prices.
