Gold Rises as Investors Assess Fed’s Hawkish Rate Outlook

Gold prices experienced a slight uptick on Thursday, following a near six-week low reached in the prior session. This movement comes as investors evaluate the implications of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s recent interest-rate hike and the indication that additional tightening measures may be on the horizon. Spot gold increased by 0.5% to $4,283.45 per ounce as of 0015, following a decline to its lowest level since August 7 on Wednesday. U.S. gold futures for December delivery experienced a decline of 1.5%, settling at $4,321.80.

The Fed raised interest rates on Wednesday and indicated further hikes in the coming months, with new U.S. central bank chief Kevin Warsh participating in a unanimous decision that effectively recognises the Trump administration’s ongoing struggle to manage inflation, which policymakers fear could escalate. “There’s been a pretty wide-ranging set of data, including the labor markets, that the economy has strengthened,” Warsh told in listing the reasons that prompted him to support a rate hike after advocating that rates should remain on hold at the Fed’s July 28-29 meeting. Rising interest rates typically exert downward pressure on gold, as they enhance the attractiveness of interest-bearing assets.

Data indicated a significant rebound in U.S. retail sales for August, as households increased their purchases across various goods and elevated spending at restaurants and bars. This trend underscores the economy’s resilience, despite rising consumer anxiety regarding elevated inflation levels. The Bank of England appears poised to maintain its current interest rates during Thursday’s meeting; however, investors are closely monitoring for any indications that escalating energy prices might compel the bank to adopt a stance similar to that of the Federal Reserve.

Elsewhere, Saudi warplanes pounded Yemen, the Houthis stated, as the Iran-backed fighters consolidated their gains following a rapid advance that has expanded Tehran’s influence in the Middle East conflict and further disrupted global oil supplies. Spot silver rose 0.6% to $63.35, platinum gained 0.8% to $1,765.65, and palladium climbed 1.4% to $1,286.95.
