Gold prices exhibited volatility on Tuesday, as market participants evaluated the Federal Reserve’s path concerning interest rates and the possible ramifications of discussions aimed at addressing the Iran conflict. In the UAE, the yellow metal has begun Wednesday on a downward trend. 24-karat is priced at Dh496 compared to Dh497.25 last evening. 22-karat is priced at Dh459.25, whereas 18-karat is valued at Dh377.50 per gram. The metal demonstrated variations ranging from a 0.4 percent increase to a 0.7 percent decrease during the session. Negotiations between the US and Iran persist, yet the likelihood of a breakthrough seems constrained, intensifying the difficulties encountered by traders.
The dollar and bond yields saw a decrease, while oil mitigated its losses after a previous decline triggered by an unverified report indicating that a breakthrough could happen this week. Oil and other energy prices have remained high, sustaining inflation concerns and potentially leading the Fed to contemplate another rate increase before the end of the year. Elevated interest rates apply downward pressure on gold, given that it generates no interest income. “Gold faces a combination of costly energy, persistent inflation, and expectations of restrictive monetary policy. The $4,100 area provides an immediate reference point, while the Fed meeting and subsequent PCE release could determine the next significant move,” states Antonio Di Giacomo.
Gold has fluctuated within a limited range throughout October. Investors are assessing the Federal Reserve’s forthcoming actions following its decision to raise interest rates in September, marking the first increase since 2023. Markets currently assign a probability of 15 percent to the possibility of an additional quarter-point increase during the meeting scheduled for October 27-28. Chairman Kevin Warsh’s remarks last week were interpreted as endorsing a pause, although he refrained from committing to a decision and stated he would not “prejudge” meetings. Most Fed officials have indicated that they anticipate at least one additional increase this year.
With inflation persisting above the 2 percent target, investors are keenly observing whether policymakers will choose to remain inactive this month and potentially reinstate tightening measures in the future. Spot gold declined by 0.04 percent to $4,124.31 as of 09:30 am in Dubai. Silver experienced a decline of 0.75 percent, settling at $57.39. Platinum exhibited an upward movement, whereas palladium encountered a downward trend. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index, which tracks the US currency, experienced a decline of 0.2 percent.
